Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is medical rehabilitation. It is a goal-oriented activity based on an assessment of functional ability performed by an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy is carried out by a healthcare professional who holds the licensed title of occupational therapist.
Occupational therapy is suitable for people of all ages who experience challenges with daily activities (such as eating, dressing, or bathing), hand use and hand-eye coordination, perception, or sensory regulation. It also benefits individuals who have difficulties with emotional and social skills or face challenges with attention and concentration.
Occupational therapy can help improve functional ability, allowing a person to participate in meaningful activities in their daily life. Various assistive devices may be used to support functional abilities, and the occupational therapist participates in the assessment and instruction in their use. The goals of therapy are guided by the needs of the person receiving rehabilitation and by what will have the greatest impact on their everyday life.
The participation and active involvement of the person receiving rehabilitation and their close contacts is crucial to the effectiveness and outcomes of occupational therapy.
The occupational therapist meets the client either at the office or in the client's everyday environment (for example, at home, daycare, or school), usually 1-2 times per week. For more severe impairments, occupational therapy may be needed for several years. Therapy is conducted in cooperation with the person receiving rehabilitation and their close contacts. When necessary, guidance is provided for family members and others who work with the client daily. For children, rehabilitation is often provided through play and games.
The client can apply for a payment commitment for speech therapy through KELA or their local municipality. In some cases, therapy can also be paid for by, for example, an insurance company or the client themselves.
